The fine Museums of San Francisco (FAMSF), which includes two establishments: San Francisco de Young Museum in the Golden Gate Park and California Palace of the Legion of Honor in Lincoln Park, could be forced to make dismissals.
These measures follow the instructions of the former mayor of the city, London Breed, according to which the city departments must expect a 15 % reduction in their subsidy in response to a deficit in the city estimated at $ 876 million in the next two years.
To reach the target of reduction of $ 3.3 million, FAMSF, which receives 20 % of its overall funding from the city has prepared a dismissal plan for almost a quarter of its staff, or 23 posts out of a total of 99. These departures would mainly affect the security team, with the abolition of around twenty security agent stations, which would represent an economy of $ 2.6 million for the city. Other positions of posts would concern security management, human resources and the functioning of the museum.
FAMSF communication director Helena Nordström, confirmed to San Francisco Chronicle That other proposals had been made, but that the administration of the new mayor, Daniel Lurie (mayor since January 2025), did not seem willing to reduce the opening hours of the eight -hour museum per week, as this would lead to a considerable drop in the number of visitors. The city is looking for other solutions to reduce costs while maintaining access to the public.
Other cultural institutions in San Francisco, such as California Academy of Sciences and Asian Art Museum, face similar reductions. The Asian Arts Museum could in particular suppress up to 13 positions in its security service.
