The Reina Sofia Museum today announced the opening date of its film room, installed in the old Auditorium of the Sabatini building, which has been renovated for that purpose for almost a year: it will be next April 10. Raised as a versatile auditorium in 1985, this space has now been redesigned for the film experience by the firm Anna & Eugeni Bach Architects and will have capacity for 133 spectators.

The remodeling has consisted of the development of actions in furniture and acoustics, the modification of the slope of the room for projections and the improvement of accessibility for people with reduced mobility. Likewise, a new image and sound system for digital cinema has been installed, with integrated server, whose operation will be compatible with that of a film projection system, both 35 mm and 16 mm, and with a 5.1 sound system.

The cinema has also been conditioned for the realization of events, presentations and conferences with simultaneous translation and support system for deaf people. The investment made amounts to 856,000 euros, financed within the framework of the recovery, transformation and resilience (PRTR) plan of the European Union, given that, attending to those responsible for the MNCARS, In a society in which the consumption of the audiovisual product is characterized by the individuality and the multiplicity of choice through the platforms, the opening of a film room in a museum of contemporary art responds to the need to establish a public space that offers the collective experience of cinema.

The first film cycle that will be screened in the renewed room will be “Cinema, Year Zero. Images of our time” and is announced as the first of future programs that will summarize all kinds of projections, commented movies and live pieces. In addition, the film screen can join the exhibition spaces in projects in which plastic and film arts enter in relation; Likewise, it will allow to strengthen alliances with festivals and institutions in initiatives linked to the seventh art and focused on diverse publics.

The “Cine, Zero” commissioner will be Chema González, head of the film department and new media of the Reina Sofía Museum, and will offer works of filmmakers and visual artists with a common goal: to reflect on the form and film discourse in the context of our time. They will be Creations of Tsai Ming-Liang, King Hu, Radu Jude Solo and with Christian Ferencz-Flatz, Ana Vaz, Khavn de la Cruz, Anna Cornudella, Veéna Paravel, Lucien Castaing-Taylor, Beatriz Santiago Muñoz and Alice Rohrwacher. It will begin that same April 10.
