A major project for this town of barely 4,000 inhabitants, but has become essential. Rebuilt in the 17th century, the old strategic fortress underwent the passage of time, especially in terms of its roof and external elevations. “His two turrets threaten to fall, we had to cover the roof that collapses in an emergency”deplores Aurélie Dupont, project manager. Water infiltration, degradation of the facades, damaged parquets … exterior as interior of the building require a deep repair.
“For the moment, the calendar is not precisely defined, because we are recruiting the heritage architect. But the work will undoubtedly be out of ten years ”, she adds. A restoration which will therefore gradually be done in view of the significant cost of the site, estimated at 5 million euros. The recent classification of the castle as a historic monument is a relief for the city, which can request subsidies with the State, the Region and Department.
The location of the Château de Pons, on the side of the cliff, makes it all the more delicate the conduct of operations, which will divide into several sections. Priority at the end and covered with the repair of covers, frames, facades and masonry. In a second step, the interior of the building will be rehabilitated: renovation of electricity, beams and boards, restarting the sets (including that of two painted XVIIth century ceilings). Ultimately, the castle – where the Town Hall was used to be located – will open to the public, welcoming an educational interpretation center and seminar rooms.
