Gaëtan Bruel undoubtedly appointed head of the National Cinema Center

The Council of Ministers should soon, perhaps even today, validate the appointment of the current director of the Rachida Dati cabinet to the presidency of the National Center for Cinema and the Animated Image (CNC).

Former director of Villa Albertine and cultural advisor at the French Embassy in the United States, Gaëtan Bruel (36) is a protégé by Jean-Yves Le Drian and Philippe Bélaval the current Culture Advisor to the Elysée. He advised the first when the Breton was Minister of Defense and then of Foreign Affairs and was briefly administrator of the Arc de Triomphe then the Pantheon when Philippe Bélaval was president of the CMN. He was also a few weeks deputy director of the Gabriel Attal cabinet then Minister of Education before joining the rue de Valois.

He replaced Dominique Boutonnat who chaired the CNC since 2019 and had to resign last July following his conviction by the criminal court for acts of sexual assault. The temporary worker was provided by the deputy managing director Olivier Henrard, unhappy candidate for the presidency but who should keep his post as director general according to information as Press correspondence.

The CNC, established in 1946, is a public organization placed under the supervision of the Ministry of Culture. Its mission is to regulate, finance and promote French cinema and audiovisual. With a budget largely fueled by the tax on film tickets and streaming services, it plays an essential role in supporting production and dissemination of French works.

The appointment of Gaëtan Bruel intervenes in a context of profound changes in the sector, marked by the development of streaming platforms, international competition and recurring issues linked to the financing of author cinema. His experience in cultural diplomacy could play a role in defending the interests of French cinema internationally.
