From the underground passage of the Milanese castle Sforza of the 15th century only remained sketches and notes of Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519), who had spent years in the service of the Duke of Milan Ludovic Sforza (1452-1508), his patron and protective. These tunnels, which we had lost track and which have become legends, have just been uncovered by a team of researchers from the University Polytechnique in Milan.
Researchers used floor penetration speed cameras (GPR) as well as laser scanners. This technology emits electromagnetic waves to identify composition variations in the basements. They have thus detected anomalies about 30-60 cm from the surface, as well as the presence of voids, suggesting the presence of underground galleries. The scanners provided 3D representations of discoveries, which made it possible to create a virtual replica of the castle, integrating the current and old characteristics.
Thanks to immersive experiences, visitors will soon be able to view the underground passages and explore the inaccessible places. The sketches of Leonardo da Vinci will serve as a guide. These sketches relate in particular the presence of a tunnel connecting the castle to the tomb of Béatrice d’Este (1475-1497), the wife of Count Ludovic, located in the Basilica Santa Maria Delle Grazie. “The Sforza Castle (built in the 15th century on the ruins of the medieval fortress) is not just a monument; It is a reservoir of stories ready to be told, each layer of stone representing the lives and inheritances of those who preceded us ”explained the researchers.
