As of July 2025, the Alsatian municipal museum located at 23-25 quai Saint-Nicolas in Strasbourg will be closed for work and should reopen in 2027. The museum, installed since 1907 in houses of the 16th and 17th centuries, is devoted to the culture and traditions of the region. It houses around 5,000 exhibition pieces (furniture, traditional costumes, toys) as well as 10,000 other documents in reserve.
The planned works aim to renovate the roof. “For the past ten years, water infiltration and floods have compromised not only the good condition of the collections but also working conditions of the teams” said Anne Mistler, the deputy mayor, in charge of the arts and culture at Strasbourg.eu.
This operation obliges to move the collections upstream to the study and conservation pole of museums in the city of Strasbourg, at the Coop. “Certain parts, such as the Stùb de Wintzenheim, will require the intervention of restaurateurs on site, to dismantle and move them without degrading them” said Marie Pottecher, the museum director at Strasbourg.eu. At the same time, the exhibition route will be refurbished and focused on a dialogue between historical elements and contemporary works.
The total budget for work amounts to 2.5 million euros, including 1.7 million euros for the Alsatian museum, funded by patrons. The project is part of a broader campaign to renovate the city museums (Strasbourg has 11 municipal museums). After the Alsatian museum, it is planned to renovate the Rohan Palace, dating from the 18th century, which houses the three museums (fine arts, decorative, archaeological arts) and whose roof is also damaged.
Pending the reopening of the Alsatian museum, presentations “outside the walls” are planned, in particular within the framework of the “short circuits” of the Eurometropolis.
