A torso of Buddha discovered on the Angkor site in Cambodia

Excavations carried out under the Apsara national authority, in collaboration with the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), in an area outside the temple of your Prohm (Angkor), made it possible to uncover the torso of a statue dating from the 12th-13th century of Buddha, represented in the Bayon style, to which he lacked his head, feet and right hand. The Bayon style is characterized by his smiling faces of Brahma, the supreme king of Hinduism.

The statue, 1.16 meters high, is decorated with jewelry, a carved dress and a carved veil. His left hand rests on his chest. It is an unusual representation in the art of the Khmer (Cambodian), noted the archaeologist Neth Simon. It was found alongside 29 other fragments, which archaeologists also attributed to the statue.

An examination at the scanner was able to confirm that the missing head was that which had been discovered in the same place in 1927 and exhibited at the National Museum of the Capital, Phnom Penh. Neth Simon told Apnews that the team was going to ask the Ministry of Culture to bring their heads and torso to exhibit them together.

These excavations aim to organize and preserve the many art objects disseminated in the TA ProHM complex, highlighting the continuous efforts to protect and understand the rich cultural heritage of Cambodia, it is indicated on the site of the Apsara national authority.

Located in the province of Siem Reap, in the north of Cambodia, the Angkor site extends over an area of approximately 400 square kilometers and includes the ruins of the capitals of different Cambodian empires from the 9th to the 15th century. The temple Ta Prohm, Brahma the ancestor (the Hindu God of Creation), located a few kilometers east of the temple of Angkor Vat, was built under the reign of King Jayavarman VII as a monastery and a place of teaching for his mother in the late 1180s. Researchers think that Bayon style statues were probably based on the real face of King Jayavarman VII.
