A new museum dedicated to science and technology opens its doors in Shenzhen

In Shenzhen, a new museum dedicated to science and technology opened its doors on May 2, 2025 in the Guangming District. Designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, the building adopts a spherical shape punctuated by outdoor terraces overlooking the park. The museum, whose total area reaches nearly 130,000 m², includes 5,000 m² of permanent exhibition rooms covering areas such as artificial intelligence, aerospace, biotechnology and other technological advances. 6,000 m² are also devoted to auditorium and immersive cinema and 34,000 m² of equipment for visitors and storage spaces. The rest is reserved for technical, administrative, circulation spaces …

Designed according to ecological standards, the building incorporates a water management system to recycle wastewater and store rainwater to reduce water consumption. In order to alleviate the exposure of the solar rays building, stainless steel panels cover the roofs, where photovoltaic panels are also integrated to produce energy.

Its building materials, which are also recyclable, have complicated the progress of the site started in 2019, due to the increase in costs caused by the Pandemic of COVID-19. Funded and managed by the municipality, the cost of the project has not been disclosed.

This new museum, entrusted to the Shenzhen Association for Science and Technology (founded in September 1978 and attached to the national network China Association for Science and Technology), thus completes the ecosystem of the Guangming District Scientific Park.

In 2018, the Shenzhen municipal committee and the city government decided to create Guangming Science City, transforming for this purpose a historically rural territory of 9,000 hectares. Being one of the central places of Guangming Science City, the Guangming Park houses, in addition to the museum, natural spaces, interactive architectural poles dedicated to popularization, sports facilities and research institutes. So many places that help make Shenzhen a scientific pole, in a national strategy aimed at making the city a world -class scientific center.
