More than a million euros collected in crowdfunding for a future video game museum

The project takes shape despite delays and concrete challenges. Initially planned for 2026, the video game museum imagined by the YouTuber Benoît Theveny (alias Tev here Japan) and the collector Ludovic Charles was presented in his final version Thursday March 25 and should open in 2028 in Bussy-Saint-Georges (Seine-et-Marne).

The site, initially planned on 3,500 m², was extended to 11,000 m². It will offer thematic spaces such as a “fantastic village” inspired by medieval role -playing games, a Game Center and a 2,450 m² arena intended for electronic sports competitions and concerts. A 5,000 m² Japanese village with shops and a restoration space will complete the whole. Some 2,500 objects, including the Magnavox Odyssey (the first console in 1972), will be exhibited.

The “Odyssey” video game console produced by the Magnavox company in 1972.

The museum will be built by the BDM real estate developer, who will remain the owner of the building walls.

The delay is explained by several factors. Although 2.3 million euros were collected during the crowdfunding campaign in 2023, only 50 % of the necessary funds, estimated between 40 and 50 million euros, are currently guaranteed. These funding comes mainly from the private sector. In addition, the extension of the project has caused an increase in costs. Finally, the building permit has not yet been issued due to the presence of wetlands on the Bussy-Saint-Georges site.

The project was also marked by the involvement of Fabien Goupilleau, municipal councilor of Bussy-Saint-Georges, appointed director general of the museum. This double function has raised questions about a possible conflict of interest. However, he stopped at the end of 2023 his political functions related to e-sport in the city.

Pending its opening, the Odyssey museum team plans to organize temporary exhibitions in Paris in order to introduce the public to the collection.
