The museums of the Palazzo Pitti in Florence have been the subject of major restorations since July, mainly targeting the Palatine gallery and the modern art gallery. This operation at an estimated cost of more than a million euros covers catering interventions on furniture, decorations and works.
The work in the Palatine gallery relates to the Quartiere del Volterrano, including the rooms of Ulysses, Jupiter, Saturn and Iliad. They consist of systematic cleaning and restoration of frescoes, stucco, hangings, murals, tapestries and original furniture, including precious marble tables. The walls are also dusted and the old chandeliers restored. In the modern art gallery, the living room del Fiorino and the Sala della Musica benefit from a restoration of frescoes and decorative elements. The first step consisted in the removal and cleaning of the hangings in the Sala di Berenice and the Sala Delle Allegorie, while the furniture was treated separately.

The Palazzo Pitti, built in the 15th century and enlarged under the Medici, has been a museum ensemble since the 19th century, now sheltering the Palatine gallery, the modern art gallery, the royal apartments, as well as various specialized museums. Its conservation has always included a strong historical dimension; The current project is a continuation of past interventions, such as the recent restoration and reopening of the 14 rooms of the royal apartments, where the emphasis was placed on the preservation of decorative elements, reflecting the tastes of successive eras. According to curator Alessandra Griffo, “The reopening of the apartments allows us to find the vision of the Palazzo Pitti as a whole, not as a collection of independent museums, but as a single palace”.
The “Boboli 2030” project announced in 2022 aims to restore the Boboli gardens, adjacent to the palace. In July 2025, the site was underway: the restorations of the amphitheater, the fountains of Neptune and Isola are underway, and should be completed at the end of 2025. The work of the Palatine gallery and the modern art gallery should be completed in the spring of 2026.
